- Mason Year 1
- Azayliah Year 4
- Izzy Year 4
During Book Week, we welcomed Senior Students from Centenary Heights State High School to read with us.
The Senior Students took our 'Write a Book in a Week' submissions to judge the winners. Their feedback and judging is included below. Congratulations to everyone who took part in the competition.
Whole Class Entries
1st Place: The Magical Dragon Fruit by 2B
- We loved the creativity demonstrated in this entry. Not only the story itself, which left us wanting more, but the addition of the passports and itinerary. We felt like we were really there!
2nd Place: All Aboard Boeing-3O by 3O
- We felt that story followed an innovative structure, with some interesting tension built in the middle. Ziggy showed great initiative using his horns to break out of the net, and you created an interesting ending with the “it was all a dream” twist.
3rd Place: Rescuing Mrs Harry by 2H
- This was such a creative entry, using all of the students’ names throughout the story. We were jealous of Mrs Harry’s itinerary, especially her meeting with Taylor Swift!
Highly Commended: Ziggy and the Mysterious Dump by 6AB
- We loved the narrative structure of this story and felt that the idea was polished – you created a spooky atmosphere and embedded the key words in a unique way!
Individual Entries
1st Place: The Amazing Adventure by Isabel Year 4
- Your chapter titles were thoughtful and helped to guide the reader through your story. The plot was entertaining, and we liked your creativity with the little images throughout your text.
2nd Place: Ziggy’s Mission by Evie Year 4
- Your story was an original idea with the inclusion of the Queen – we felt that you had some fascinating characters. Your use of the letter made for an interesting twist in the plot.
3rd Place Ziggy the Goat and the Trotting Tiger Clan by Eleanor Year 2
- We were all shocked that such a creative story could be written by such a young author. We loved the happy ending, where everyone became friends.
Highly Commended: Ziggy the Goat and the Dragon Fruit Quest by Lexie and Alexis in Year 6 and Adventure by Melissa Gilham in Year 6.

TEACHER AIDE APPRECIATION WEEK
We want to say a big thank you to our teacher aides! Each and every day, you give so much of your time, energy and care to support our Rangeville students as they learn and grow. From, helping in classrooms and preparing resources, to offering a kind word or a gentle hand when it’s needed most, your work makes a world of difference. We appreciate you and celebrate everything you do for our children and our school community.

WELCOME TO OUR KINDY FRIENDS!
Our Prep cohort will expand a little further on Thursday morning as we welcome the Rangeville Early Learning and Oak on Rangeville Kindy groups to our school. SPOTLIGHT ON SPORTS SUCCESS!
A huge congratulations to Patrick who proudly represented our school at a recent Multi-Class Sports event hosted by the Glennie School. Your effort, determination, and positive spirit were inspiring to us all. We are so proud of you!

Reading Through the Australian Curriculum – V9 Australian Curriculum in Practice.
Reading Basics – Phonological and Phonemic Awareness
At Rangeville State School, spelling and reading lessons contain elements designed to develop student’s phonological and phonemic awareness. These skills form the foundation of encoding and decoding words and unlike phonics, which focuses on teaching spelling-sound relationships, these tasks are oral. Phonological and phonemic awareness is about the sounds in spoken words and a child’s understanding that spoken words are made up of sounds.
Source: Hanging Around in Primary (www.hangingaroundinprimary.com)

Phonological awareness
Phonological awareness is made up of a group of skills. Examples include being able to identify words that rhyme, counting and identifying the number of syllables in words, recognizing words with the same beginning sounds and segmenting a sentence into words. The most sophisticated — and last to develop — is called phonemic awareness.
Phonemic awareness
Phonemic awareness is the ability to notice, think about, and work with the individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. Manipulating the sounds in words includes blending, stretching, or otherwise changing words. Children can demonstrate phonemic awareness in several ways, including:
- Recognizing which words in a set of words begin with the same sound.
(“Bell, bike, and boy all have /b/ at the beginning.”)
- Identifying and saying the first or last sound in a word.
(“The beginning sound of dog is /d/.” “The ending sound of sit is /t/.”)
- Combining (blending) the separate sounds in a word to say the whole word.
(“/m/, /a/, /p/ – map.”)
- Breaking (segmenting) a word into its separate sounds.
(“up – /u/, /p/.”)
- Changing a sound to make a new word
(“Change the /t/ for /m/ – top becomes mop”)
Children who cannot hear and work with the phonemes of spoken words will have a difficult time learning how to relate these phonemes to letters when they see them in written words.
You can support your child’s phonological and phonemic awareness skills through some simply and fun games.
Rhyme Time: Say a word and ask your child to say a word that rhymes with it, like tall and ball or bat and cat
I Spy (using initial sounds): Look for objects and use the starting sound rather than the letter name as the clue.
Sound Hunt: Give you child a sound , such as /sss/ and encourage them to find as many objects as possible that start with that sound.
More activities can be found on the Reading Rockets website.

Sporting Successes
For the second year in a row, Diego R from Year 6 has taken out the ‘Most Outstanding Male Athlete – 10 12 Years’ at this week’s Darling Downs Athletics Championships.
Diego came first in the 100m (13.24 sec), first in the 200m (28.02 sec) and first in the Long Jump with a leap of 4.73m.
Congratulations Diego, we are so proud of your efforts and wish you the very best of luck when you complete at the State Championships in Townsville in October.

Congratulations to Eddie J from Year 5 who played as part of the Darling Downs Softball team at the recent championship held at Ipswich. The girls placed 6th overall out of 11 teams represented and by all accounts thoroughly enjoyed the competition. Well done, Eddie!
Berry Street Education Model
We are in the process (over the years of 2024 and 2025) of implementing the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) here at Rangeville State School. The BSEM is based on classroom strategies informed by Berry Street's approaches to trauma-informed learning and the science of wellbeing. It has been designed by teachers and education leaders for use by all school staff.
This is part of our whole school vision and approach to student wellbeing and engagement. This education model helps us to help our students by:
- understanding the impacts of trauma on child development and the ability to learn
- creating a supportive and trauma-informed positive education classroom
- bolstering student-teacher relationships
- instilling strengths-based practices across the school.
Teachers and support staff are participating in the last of four days of training on the Student Free Day. Staff are all using the strategies we are learning, to work with our students by creating safe learning classrooms with routines and expectations that are consistent every day. We are implementing the language and strategies used in BSEM, including the use of Morning Circle, brain breaks and positive routines each day. In classrooms, we develop ‘Ready to Learn’ Plans to help with self-regulation and engagement.
Building blocks to achieve academic and personal growth
The five domains of the Berry Street Education Model correspond with child-development capacities that students need to grow in order to be ‘ready to learn’. When considering how to best meet the needs of students, we focus on building self-regulatory ability, relational capacity and then nurture wellbeing and willingness to engage in learning.
Body
Increasing students’ capacity for physical and emotional regulation of the stress response, de-escalation and focus.
Relationship
Nurturing on-task learning through relational classroom management strategies.
Stamina
Creating a culture of academic persistence by nurturing resilience, emotional intelligence and a growth mindset.
Engagement
Motivating students with strategies that increase their willingness to learn.
Character
Harnessing a values and character strengths approach for learning and future pathways.
We are enthusiastic about the opportunities provided by this framework. The real-life classroom evidence and practical strategies gives teachers the tools that they can use with students every day as well as a conceptual model for planning for the future. Please keep a look out for more information about BSEM in upcoming newsletters.

End of Term PBL Reward Days
What a busy time we will be having celebrating our wonderful students in Week 10. Not only will the students from Year 3 – 6 be performing in the annual school Musical, we will also be acknowledging the positive behaviour of our students in the end of term PBL Reward Days.
The teachers are in the process of finalising the plans for each of the year level’s rewards and we will communicate the activities for each year level early next week.
News from Mr Manttan - Head of Curriculum
Every day counts
When students are regularly at school, they don’t just keep up with new learning in English and Mathematics - they also build confidence, friendships, and routines that set them up for long-term success. Being present every day helps children feel included, valued, and connected to their classmates and teachers.
Missing school has a bigger impact than many families realise. For example, 90% attendance equals one day of school missed every fortnight.
At 80% attendance, that’s one day every week. Over the course of a year, this adds up to weeks of lost learning.
At Rangeville SS, our whole school attendance rate currently sits at 92.2% for the year-to-date, and our goal is to reach 95% attendance.
How is school attendance for your child/children? To be at or above 95%, a student can have missed no more than 6 days. If your child has missed 7 or more days, their attendance is currently below 95%.
Thank you to all families who are making school attendance a priority - your support makes a real difference to your child’s learning and wellbeing. Let’s keep working together to lift this number even higher.

District Chess Teams Competition
Nineteen of our students proudly represented the school at the District Chess Teams Competition last week. All of our teams played with focus and determination, showing excellent sportsmanship and supporting each other throughout the day.
We are delighted to share that one of our junior teams achieved a strong fifth place overall. In addition, our senior team performed outstandingly and has now qualified to compete for the State Division.
Congratulations to all of our players for their effort, skill, and excellent behaviour on the day. We are very proud of their achievements!

Year 6 Brisbane Excursion
For the excursion to Brisbane, we attended the Spark Lab, Queensland Museum and visited a Chinese restaurant. The museum had cool bugs and history of dinosaurs, but the Spark Lab was the best. It had mist, electricity, globes of the world and lots of other really cool and fun things. At the Chinese restaurant, there were lots of food, dumplings, spring rolls, rice, noodles and Chinese tea. Even the bus ride was fun!
~ Aryton
I am very appreciative of the opportunity I got learning about all the amazing things in Spark Lab such as what objects are conductors of electricity and seeing all the old fossils and dinosaur footprints. It was very fun and educational. This excursion taught me lots about Science and also Chinese eating etiquette and I will always treasure these memories. Thank you for this awesome time Mrs Tay.
~ Alice

Opti-MINDS Challenge
Our Opti-MINDs teams competed this past Sunday 31st August at The Glennie School. The other schools participating on the day were: Holy Name, Back Plains, St John’s Roma, The Glennie School, Middle Ridge, Darling Heights, Our Lady of the Southern Cross, St Mary’s Goondiwindi, Toowoomba Anglican School and Dalby State School. Whilst none of our teams placed in the competition, each team learned a great deal about the spirit of Opti-MINDS. The Opti-MINDs challenge is a creative sustainability inclusive team challenge, which empowers participants to THINK, CREATE and COMMUNICATE. Teams are never compared to one another, and all judging is criteria-based just like it is for school assessments. It’s all about working collaboratively to produce a high-quality solution to a scenario from four different categories: Language Literature, Social Sciences, Science Engineering and Media Communication. We all had a wonderful day and were supported by our families every step of the way. Thank you everyone for all your support. Special mention to Mr Watson for donating wheels, Mrs Sense for 3D printing, Sally our School Captain for helping assist our younger groups in rehearsals, and for Miss Marshall volunteering her Sunday to be a judge and help the Opti-MINDS organisers.

QParents

QParents is a secure, online portal that has been created by the Department of Education to provide parents of Queensland state school students with 24-hour access to their child's information. The portal allows you to securely access information about your child and communicate directly with your child's school.
QParents provides secure, online access to student information such as:
- attendance details
- consent forms
- payment of invoices
- payment history
- behaviour
- report cards and assessment dates
- upcoming events
- timetables
- student photo
In addition to the information provided, it's important to note that the QParents portal only sends invoices to the parent/carer who is responsible for 100% of the student's school fees. This means that if there are multiple parents or carers who share responsibility for fees, only one of them will receive the invoice through the portal. It's important for parents and carers to communicate and coordinate payment arrangements if they are sharing the responsibility for fees.
We encourage you to register for QParents. To do this, simply express your interest by emailing admin@rangevilless@eq.edu.au or by phoning 4617 7333 and Mrs Llewellyn will email you an invitation to register (which includes your log-in code) and your child's unique EQID. Your child's EQID can also be found on your child's Semester Report Card.
