Deputy Principal - SWD Message
Friendship
Friendships are one of the most valuable relationships we can have in our lives. They provide a sense of belonging, boost our happiness, and support our growth as individuals.
In a school environment, friendships play a crucial role. In addition to emotional support, friendships teach us valuable life skills like communication, empathy and conflict resolution. Through friendships, we learn how to navigate disagreements, understand different perspectives, and work towards common goals.
Take the time to discuss the important qualities of a good friend with your child. Friends are kind, honest, trustworthy and respectful. Share signs of unhealthy friendships, such as mean behaviour, bullying and peer pressure. Talk about the importance of friendship being a ‘two-way street’. Friendships will evolve as your child grows, so this is an important topic to keep revisiting.

To support our Term 4 swimming program, Mr Morris has invited selected students to squad swimming training to begin in Week 4. Invitations were emailed on Friday 18 October.
The purpose of the squad is to work on stroke correction, improve swimming endurance and boost physical fitness in the water.
The squad sessions will take place on Wednesday for the Year 3 & Year 4 students and Thursday mornings for the Year 5 & Year 6 students from 8:00-8:40am. Squad will commence in Week 4 and conclude in Week 9.
Please note the following details:

- What to bring: Swim shirt, cap, goggles, and if available, swimming kit (kickboard, pull buoy, hand paddles, fins). Students should arrive with their swimmers on to save time before the session.
- Cancellation- If a session is to be cancelled for whatever reason- inclement weather, pool breakdown, staff absence etc Families will be contacted via email by no later than 7.30am. If students/families happen to miss this message and the pool is closed upon their arrival, students are asked to make their way to the before school arrival area and wait quietly.
- Medication- Asthma- Any students that may need their asthma puffer during this time are asked to bring this along with them and hand to Mr Morris as they sign in and can collect it again at the end of the session when students head back to class.

Classroom News
1L - In 1L we consolidate our number knowledge by playing different maths games. In the game, “Race to 20” we play with a partner and need to be the fastest to add our numbers to get to 20. There are so many combinations that can be added together to get to 20!
PURA Syndrome Awareness Day
23rd October – PURA Syndrome Awareness Day
I’m Moz Condon in Year 6. I have PURA Syndrome. For the upcoming PURA Syndrome Awareness Day on the 23rd of October, my teacher and my family would like to share some information about this condition.
PURA Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects neurodevelopment. PURA syndrome arises when there is a genetic alteration affecting one of a person’s two copies of the PURA gene. To date, the PURA Syndrome Foundation is aware of just over 650 individuals with PURA Syndrome worldwide.
Individuals with PURA syndrome can be affected in different ways, but common physical features include: low muscle tone, flexible joints, full cheeks and open lips in resting position. All children with PURA syndrome who have been identified to date have a moderate to severe degree of learning disability and developmental delay.
Individuals with PURA and their families may need to learn verbal or non-verbal cues or use a communication device in order to communicate. Moz communicates using his PODD (Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display). This allows him to point to or look at symbols to tell us information. Moz and others with PURA can also express their feelings with sounds and movements.
Individuals with PURA syndrome tend to be very social and friendly people. Moz enjoys his classmates and teachers working and playing with him. He also loves music. If you see Moz around the school, please say hello and spend some time with him as this will make him very happy!
More information about PURA Syndrome can be found at https://purasyndrome.org/make-an-impact/awareness/#

QParents
QParents is a secure, online portal that has been created by the Department of Education to provide parents of Queensland state school students with 24-hour access to their child's information. The portal allows you to securely access information about your child and communicate directly with your child's school.
QParents provides secure, online access to student information such as:
- attendance details
- consent forms
- payment of invoices
- payment history
- behaviour
- report cards and assessment dates
- upcoming events
- timetables
- student photo
In addition to the information provided, it's important to note that the QParents portal only sends invoices to the parent/carer who is responsible for 100% of the student's school fees. This means that if there are multiple parents or carers who share responsibility for fees, only one of them will receive the invoice through the portal. It's important for parents and carers to communicate and coordinate payment arrangements if they are sharing the responsibility for fees.
We encourage you to register for QParents. To do this, simply express your interest by emailing mllew16@eq.edu.au or by phoning 4617 733 and Mrs Llewellyn will email you an invitation to register (which includes your log-in code) and your childs unique EQID. Your child's EQID can also be found on your child's Semester Report Card.
