2022 Principal Conference
Last Monday – Wednesday, I attended the 2022 Principals’ Conference. It will go down as a significant moment in our State’s education history. The positive energy and commitment to every student as we came together as a state schooling system was clearly evident throughout the conference.
At the conference, the Education Minister, The honourable, Member for McConnel and Minister for Education - Minister for Industrial Relations - Minister for Racing, Grace Grace announced the draft education strategy Equity and Excellence: realising the potential of every student, and courageously and previously unheard of sought everyone’s advice in order to inform the government’s next steps. The strategy reflects our future focus on three areas to achieve equity and excellence:
- educational achievement: because knowing each student’s learning progression is essential to making sure they are on track for positive educational outcomes
- wellbeing and engagement: because being healthy, confident and resilient is a foundation for engaging in learning
- culture and inclusion: because the diversity of our staff, students and school communities is our greatest strength.
The Director-General, Mr Michael De'Ath presented the rationale for system transformation and emphasised significant new aspects in the strategy, such as a renewed focus on collective responsibility for student outcomes and better aligned, highly differentiated regional and system supports.
The speaker program challenged some of our thinking around working within and across school boundaries. Maggie Farrar questioned how Queensland can realise the power and potential of collaboration within and between schools. Derek Wenmoth encouraged leaders to learn from the past and look to the future, in order to provide modern learning relevant to students and communities. Professor Tony Dreise shared evidence and experience around the many facets of disadvantage experienced by First Nations peoples and highlighted the unique opportunity that schools and educators have to change the odds for all learners. During the Business Day, our perspectives and feedback were captured through digital tools and robust table workshops.
COVID Update
Queensland Health has published new Guidelines for a person diagnosed with COVID-19 or symptoms of acute respiratory infection, which replaces the Management of Diagnosed Cases of COVID-19 and Close Contacts Direction (No. 5). I encourage you to read the new guidelines, as they apply to any person who has symptoms of an acute respiratory infection or has tested positive to COVID-19. The Guidelines for a close contact in Queensland - COVID-19 also provides information for those who have been in contact with a person who has tested positive to COVID-19.
The guidelines
While there is no longer a public health direction in relation to isolation, the guidelines recommend that you stay at home and isolate after testing positive to COVID-19, or if you have any symptoms of an acute respiratory infection. It is recommended that you should not return to work or school until your symptoms have substantially reduced, and you have gone for at least 24 hours without a fever requiring the use of fever-reducing medications such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. It is also recommended that you wear a face mask when in an indoor setting (when outside your home), for at least 7 days after testing positive to COVID-19.

Hayden and His Moon Cakes
Recently, Hayden (6L) put his Chinese writing skills to a good cause. He wrote two letters in Chinese characters to the Chinese Embassy in Canberra to introduce himself and to enquire about the Ambassador.
They were so impressed with him that they sent him a letter of encouragement and a big box of Chinese moon cakes in time for the Chinese Moon Festival. He was over the moon (pun intended) as he loves moon cakes and has for the past two years made them at home too which by itself is not an easy feat.
Congratulations Hayden! May your desire to learn another language and culture bring many more exciting stories and adventures to your life!
ICAS 2022
This year, twenty-one students sat a number of different ICAS assessments online. All these children have shown they were able to successfully participate in this internationally acknowledged opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills. In acknowledging those who sat the ICAS tests this year 14 of these students either received a merit, credit or distinction in at least one of the learning areas. Those who did not achieve one of these ratings will still receive a participation certificate.
All children who participated should be congratulated for their efforts. It is important to see the potential in every learner and to recognise and reward their academic excellence.
Certificates were handed out at today's parade. Some certificates are still to be received by the school and will be handed out when they arrive.
Thank you to the parents, teachers and students for your co-operation with this event in assisting to make it flow smoothly.

Rangeville State School P&C Association Outside School Hours Care (ROSHC)
At ROSHC we have been working with the children on remembering our ROSHC expectations as we have been talking a lot about the importance of having a safe and welcoming environment here for all, and that we need to remember the expectations. In order to remember them the educators set out different active activities and craft activities, as well as having many conversations with the children around resolving conflicts and working together.
We have been focusing on nutrition this week as it is National Nutrition Week. This has seen the children exploring different fruits, veggies and ways to keep our bodies healthy. From making a rainbow of fruit and veggies to designing their own lunchboxes, there have been many opportunities for children to learn about nutrition and what helps our minds and bodies thrive.
With the nice weather we had been having, the children have been enjoying getting their hands dirty in our gardens helping to keep them all tidy and free of weeds. In the Bush Tucker Garden there has been a massive effort from children and educators in weeding and mulching. Some of the plants are becoming ready to eat and use which has caused much excitement amongst the children as they explore new flavours. Our new veggie patch and small gardens that we planted over vacation care have started to flower and the veggies are looking great. We have been discussing ways to help free our plants of slugs that have made themselves at home on our plants as well.
Next week is Celebrating Children’s Week the 2022 Theme is ‘All Children have the right to a standard of living that supports their wellbeing and healthy development’ United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, Article 27.
