Principal's News
Mental Health and wellbeing formed a central part of our school’s journey this week. Yesterday, Thursday 8 September, was RUOK Day and we paused to ask our school community members – Are You OK? This annual event gives all in our community an opportunity to stop and reflect on how we can make the lives of those around us better just by asking RUOK? If the spectre of COVID-19 has taught us anything it is the significance of mental health and wellbeing. Current research shows us that the problems of mental illness and depression are at alarming levels. Moreover, these challenges appear to cut through culture and socio-economic status. Perhaps more significantly these issues are increasing prevalent in our children which then leads to problems later in life.
The importance of making an inquiry into the wellbeing of a friend or colleague can have a profound impact on their lives. The RUOK movement has developed considerable resources to support each of us to commence 'a conversation that can change a life'. I would urge you to take some time to visit their website. The information contained within the site is easy to digest and most vitally, it can have a positive impact on the important people in your lives. Notably the site shares four easy steps that can assist individuals in asking if someone is OK.
- Have the courage to ask – RUOK
- Be relaxed and friendly.
- Mention specific things in their behaviour which prompted you to ask.
- “You seemed more quiet than usual of late.”
- Listen with an open mind
- Ensure that you have time to listen.
- Encourage them to expand on their comments.
- Encourage action from the individual
- What have you done in the past when things are not going well?
- How can I support you?
- Encourage further help if you feel the matter is too 'big.'
- Check in
- Put a date in your diary to check on how they are going.
- Stay in touch.
AGOSCI Presentation
Congratulations to Ms Chapman, Mrs Hodgson and Mrs Franklin who presented the AAC work and story to the AGOSCI conference on Sunday in Hobart. From all of the positive feedback, the session was sensationally received “Janelle Sampson, CEO of Two-Way Street who is an amazing leader in AAC said ‘it was the best presentation she has ever seen at AGOSCI’. She also said, ‘she was just so excited and impressed by Ms Chapman’s work it made her dance like Peter Allan!” Lots of people loved seeing what was possible and there were parents in tears asking if we could share our presentation with their children’s schools in WA and Victoria.
Congratulations ladies, what a proud and wonderful moment, reflecting and celebrating all the hard and innovative work undertaken during your day-to-day teaching and learning.
School Support Staff Week
This week (5-9 September) was Support Staff Week. During this week, we recognise the outstanding contribution made to our school community by administration officers, teacher aides, facilities officers and cleaners. Without this group of dedicated and professional people, our school simply could not operate. Throughout the ongoing challenges presented by the COVID-19 situation they have been, and continue to be, on the front line ensuring that our students have a safe, efficient and supportive environment in which to learn.
I know that you join me in expressing heartfelt appreciation to the support staff at Rangeville State School.
I wish to extend my sincere thanks to Mr Wayne Beeston, Regional School Sport Officer, who has led an outstanding representative school sport program in the Darling Downs since 1996 and will be taking leave from the end of Term 3, 2022. Over the last 26 years there have been a remarkable 37 000 students (including many from Rangeville State School) participate in the program. Wayne’s dedication to the role has both supported and inspired sports officials, many of whom are long-serving thanks to Wayne’s leadership and commitment. We wish you all the best in retirement Wayne and thank you for your support, care and pride for the students from DD who always achieved their best.
PBL In Action
This week Eli, Lachlan and Jack purchased Principal Helper as part of the PBL Roar Paws shopping. The wonderful helpers became Principal Facility Inspectors (PFI) for an hour and were able to inspect the new blinds that have been installed in B, H, X and C Blocks as well as the new ramp and undercovered walkway near B Block.
The PFI's found the new blinds to be acceptable and well installed. They loved the new electronic blinds in H Block.
The new ramp was found to be unacceptable (hard markers!) as they found bolts, rubbish and a broken builders pencil and it was dirty.
At the conclusion of the Facilities Inspection, they reported their findings Mrs Maslen as well.
Thank you from your trusty Principal Facility Inspectors.

Year 2 Walk to Picnic Point
After having to postpone our excursion due to rain, the Year Two students finally ventured out on a walk to Picnic Point last Tuesday. As part of their HASS unit, students needed to consider the significance of a place within their local community, investigate why it is important to different groups of people, and explain why it should be preserved for future generations.
There was much excitement as classes searched for clues during a scavenger hunt that took them in and around Lion’s Park, the waterfall, and the lookout before meeting together for morning tea at the Witch’s House playground.
Thank you to all the staff and parent helpers that joined us on the day.
School Musical: A Year with Frog and Toad KIDS
A hit on Broadway, A Year with Frog and Toad was nominated for three Tony Awards – including Best Musical. Based on Arnold Lobel's well-loved books, and featuring a memorable score by Robert and Willie Reale, this whimsical show follows two great friends – the cheerful, popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad – through four fun-filled seasons. Also featuring performances from Rangeville’s award winning ensembles.
Tickets can be purchased from the Empire Theatre https://www.empiretheatre.com.au/event/1100/a-year-with-frog-and-toad-kids
